Featured Speaker:
DAVE MILNARIK – Executive Director, Nebraska Sports Council
The Nebraska Sports Council and the Lincoln Convention & Visitors Bureau will host the 2015 State Games of America July 28-Aug. 2, 2015.
The State Games of America have been conducted biennially since 1999, with host cities including St. Louis (1999, 2001), Hartford (2003), Colorado Springs (2005, 2007, 2009) and San Diego (2011). The 2013 State Games of America was held in Hershey-Harrisburg, PA.
Under the State Games of America format, all residents of the host state are eligible to participate along with State Games participants from all other states who’ve earned a medal in the two years leading up to the State Games of America. Qualifying events include Summer Games held in 29 states and Winter Games held in nine states.
The 2015 State Games of America in Lincoln is expected to attract 12,000 Nebraska participants and 6,000 non-resident qualifiers, making it the largest in history. The previous record was set in Colorado Springs in 2009 with just over 10,000 total participants.
With 18,000 participants, 5,000 volunteers and 24,000 additional spectators/guests, total attendance is projected at 47,000. The State Games of America will take the place of the Cornhusker State Games in 2015. More than 60 sports will be offered, which is also an event record.
At least a dozen sports will take place in Omaha, including figure skating, which has been the largest State Games of America sport in participation every year, averaging around 900.
The Lincoln headquarters for the 2015 State Games of America will be at Pinnacle Bank Arena, which will host the temporary office, packet pickup, athletes village, vendor expo, evening television show and several competitions. A similar headquarters location will be established in Omaha at a location to be announced.
Attendance for the 2015 State Games of America Opening Ceremonies, which will take place at UNL’s Memorial Stadium, is expected to exceed 40,000.
This is the NLBA designated volunteer event for 2015. Members are encouraged to help and more information regarding our organized volunteer efforts will be coming soon.
